02-03-2017 - Bye Bye Miss American Pie... The Day The Music Died

Bye Bye Miss American Pie

On February 2nd 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson, aka the Big Bopper, were on the 11th night of their Winter Dance Party tour through the snow-covered Midwest. It was a Monday, but 1,100 teenagers crowded into the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, for two sold-out shows. The musicians' bus had broken down a couple times, so Holly chartered a plane to go to the next gig in Minnesota. Waylon Jennings, who was Holly's bass player on tour, gave up his seat to the Big Bopper, as he had a cold. Valens and Holly's guitarist, Tommy Allsup, agreed to flip a coin for the last seat, and Valens won the toss. The plane took off after midnight and crashed in a blizzard, killing the three rockers along with the pilot on February 3rd. That day became known as the Day the Music Died, but their music lives on...

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away

I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play

And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken

And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died
And they were singing

Bye, Bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die
